Circle Launches StableFX: 24/7 Onchain Foreign Exchange on the Arc Blockchain

Circle's new StableFX engine lets vetted institutions trade stablecoin FX pairs around the clock with atomic settlement on Arc mainnet.

3 min read

Circle switched on 24-hour stablecoin foreign-exchange settlement on Arc this week, targeting a global FX market that moves nearly $10 trillion daily — and that still largely shuts down when banks close.

What StableFX Does

StableFX is an institutional-grade stablecoin FX engine built on Arc that combines Request-for-Quote (RFQ) execution with onchain settlement. Screened businesses can request competing quotes from multiple liquidity providers and settle both sides of a stablecoin currency trade simultaneously.

Users can choose near-instant settlement or defer completion to an agreed window, extending institutional FX activity beyond conventional banking hours.

How It Works

The platform operates on a straightforward flow:

  1. Takers request quotes through the API, specifying currency pair and amount
  2. Multiple liquidity providers compete to offer the best rate
  3. Settlement occurs automatically through smart contract escrow on Arc
  4. Payment-versus-payment ensures both sides settle or neither does

Quotes return in under 500 milliseconds. Settlement windows can be instant, hourly, or daily.

Supported Currencies

StableFX currently supports USDC and EURC, with Circle expanding to a broad range of local stablecoin pairs. Active or onboarding pairs include:

AUDD, BRLA, JPYC, KRW1, MXNB, QCAD, ZARU, and more than a dozen others across global markets.

Arc Mainnet Context

StableFX launched alongside Arc mainnet — Circle's enterprise blockchain designed as an "Economic OS for the internet." Key Arc features relevant to FX:

  • Gas in dollars. Fees paid in USDC, no volatile native token
  • Sub-second finality. Deterministic, instant settlement
  • Agentic economic activity. Built from genesis for AI agents as economic actors
  • Institutional security. Post-quantum signatures and deterministic consensus

The agentic design is notable. BlackRock's research on the machine-native economy argued that AI agents need programmable payment rails. Arc and StableFX are explicitly built for that future.

The FX Market Opportunity

Global FX markets move approximately $10 trillion per day, but settlement is constrained by banking hours, correspondent banking relationships, and legacy infrastructure. Stablecoin FX on Arc offers:

  • 24/7 trading without waiting for market opens
  • Atomic settlement eliminating counterparty risk during the settlement window
  • Programmable terms enabling automated hedging and treasury management
  • Lower costs by removing intermediary banks from the settlement chain

Limitations

Circle is transparent about what StableFX does not do:

  • It exchanges digital currencies but does not automatically convert stablecoins into bank account cash
  • Firms using partner-issued stablecoins need separate arrangements for deposits, redemptions, and local payout
  • Circle Mint provides USDC/EURC liquidity in supported markets, but that access does not extend to all partner tokens

Market Context

StableFX arrives during a week when:

  • The Trump administration is reportedly planning an overseas stablecoin push
  • BlackRock published research on AI agents driving stablecoin demand
  • Bitcoin retreated to $84,000 amid broader market weakness

The infrastructure layer of crypto is advancing regardless of speculative price action.

For Builders and Institutions

If you operate across multiple currency markets, StableFX represents a new settlement option. The API-driven RFQ model fits naturally into automated treasury systems. And the Arc blockchain's agentic design means AI-driven FX hedging — an agent that monitors exposure and executes trades autonomously — is an intended use case, not a hack.

Circle is not just issuing stablecoins anymore. It is building the financial infrastructure they run on.
