Bitcoin Holds Above $76,000 After the Fed's First Rate Hike in Three Years

Markets absorbed a 25-basis-point Fed increase while a House panel advanced legislation to codify a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.

The Federal Reserve raised its target federal funds rate by 25 basis points on September 16, lifting the range to 3.75%–4.00%. It was the first rate increase since July 2023, and the FOMC voted unanimously. Among 18 officials submitting projections, 16 expect at least one additional 25-basis-point hike by year-end, with four projecting two more.

Crypto markets, often sensitive to tighter monetary policy, largely shrugged. Bitcoin traded near $76,270, up roughly 0.7% on the day. Ethereum moved to about $2,432, gaining 1.4% over 24 hours. The global crypto market cap rose about 1.0% to $2.70 trillion.

Why the muted reaction matters

Higher rates typically pressure risk assets by increasing the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding positions and strengthening the dollar. Bitcoin's ability to hold above $76,000 — and maintain a gain of roughly 17.7% over the past 30 days — suggests the hike was well telegraphed and that crypto investors are weighing other narratives alongside monetary policy.

One of those narratives is legislative. The U.S. House Financial Services Committee voted 28–21 to advance the American Reserve Modernization Act, which would establish legal status for a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve with a minimum 20-year holding period for Bitcoin acquired through civil and criminal forfeiture.

From executive action to statutory commitment

The Strategic Bitcoin Reserve concept has existed as executive policy under the Trump administration. Advancing it through committee moves the idea toward binding law. If enacted, the bill would effectively bar the government from selling seized Bitcoin for two decades — removing a recurring source of supply that has periodically pressured markets when forfeited coins hit auction.

The legislation still faces a long path through the full House, the Senate, and potential reconciliation. But the committee vote is a meaningful step toward treating Bitcoin as a long-duration sovereign asset rather than a liquid confiscation receipt.

Regulatory crosscurrents

The same 24-hour window brought mixed signals on broader crypto regulation. Senator Thom Tillis filed a motion to reconsider after the CLARITY Act failed a cloture vote 49–50, keeping the bill alive procedurally. Separately, the House advanced custody framework legislation and a tax bill raising the small crypto transaction exemption threshold to $600.

On the product side, Kraken parent Payward received approval to offer U.S. customers on-chain perpetual futures, and Aave announced an institutional real-world asset hub on Avalanche backed by Tether's USAT stablecoin.

Market structure signals

On-chain data showed more nuanced activity beneath headline prices. Bitcoin exchange-traded products saw consecutive days of net outflows after a period of inflows, and short-term momentum indicators softened even as spot prices held.

That combination — resilient spot prices, softer ETF flows, and a hawkish Fed — describes a market digesting macro tightening while policy and product developments provide sector-specific support.

What to watch next

Three variables will likely drive the next leg:

  1. Follow-through hikes — If the Fed delivers the additional increases officials project, risk assets will be tested again.
  2. Reserve legislation — Progress on the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve bill could tighten effective supply from government wallets.
  3. Gold competition — Some analysts note gold's structural demand as a counterweight pulling capital away from crypto during uncertainty.

For now, Bitcoin cleared a Fed hike without breaking key levels. That is not a guarantee of future strength, but it is a notable data point in a year defined by policy volatility and institutional product expansion.
