More Than $1 Billion in Bitcoin Shorts Liquidated as BTC Eyes $90,000
A breakout above $86,000 triggered over $1 billion in short liquidations, resetting market positioning as leverage builds on the long side.

Bitcoin's push above $86,000 on September 23, 2026, liquidated more than $1 billion in short positions and put $90,000 back on the radar as the market's next major test. The move broke through a resistance zone that had contained price action for months, turning concentrated bearish bets into forced buying.
How the Squeeze Unfolded
For weeks, bitcoin traded in a tight band between $82,000 and $86,000. Short sellers positioned themselves betting on rejection at the upper boundary. When price broke through instead, those positions unwound violently.
CoinGlass data showed more than $1 billion in short liquidations during the breakout session. The cascade worked like a textbook short squeeze: rising price triggers margin calls, forced buys push price higher, more shorts get liquidated.
Positioning Reset
Leverage is rebuilding on the long side. Alphractal estimated that among positions not yet liquidated, longs account for roughly 71% versus 29% shorts — one of the widest imbalances since near the all-time high in October 2025.
Glassnode noted that long leverage in the options market is gradually returning as bitcoin trades around $86,000. However, speculative overheating remains lower than during the previous peak phase, and perpetual futures funding rates sit at neutral or below.
That suggests the rally has room to extend before reaching the euphoric leverage levels that typically precede sharp corrections.
The $90,000 Target
Options markets are pricing the next leg clearly. Deribit open interest clusters at:
- $90,000: ~$2.7 billion
- $95,000: ~$2.7 billion
- $100,000: ~$2.3 billion
Combined exposure at those three strikes totals roughly $7.7 billion. At current prices, bitcoin needs less than a 5% move to reach $90,000 — a level that would confirm the breakout and potentially trigger another round of short covering.
Macro Context
The squeeze did not happen in isolation. Falling oil prices supported risk appetite. Bond markets rallied. And Washington delivered two bullish signals for crypto: committee approval of the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve bill and SEC action on tokenized stock trading.
On-chain indicators also strengthened, with network activity expanding alongside price.
Risk Factors
Every squeeze eventually exhausts itself. Long-dominated positioning at 71% is a warning sign for contrarians. Funding rates have not yet spiked, but sustained moves toward $90,000 could attract late longs at poor entries.
For traders, the key levels are now support at the former resistance zone ($82,000-$86,000) and resistance at $90,000 where options gamma may accelerate moves in either direction.
For long-term holders, the liquidation event marks a positioning reset — bears who fought the range are out, and the path to new highs is clearer than it has been in months.
